First Year at U. S. Steel Research Laboratory ( June 1956 - June 1957) After graduation, I took a job at the U. S. Steel Applied Research Laboratory in Monroeville, PA. I was assigned to the Statistics Section as a statistician. The main building, Building A, at the lab The lab campus The
first computer at the lab was a Burroughs E101 shown on the left with
Chuck Davis and Dick Brandt. It was the size of a large desk and
had only 100 programmable steps. On the left, Joe Geissler is
wiping while Irwin Miller washes in Irwin's home; Joe and Irwin
were in the Statistics Section. I roomed at the Tonnaleuka Club at 353 Marguerite St. in Wilmerding, less than 4 miles from the lab, for a year before marrying Anne in June 1957. I also took breakfast there. The club dates back to 1901 when Westinghouse Air Brake opened it to provide room and board for their young single male engineers and office personnel. Back then 30 men lived there but in 1956 less than ten, some from the lab and some from Westinghouse. The building is empty today. In
the fall of 1956, I traded in my pea green 1951 Studebaker for a red
and white 1956 Chevrolet convertible. I purchased the new car from
Beryl Chevrolet in Turtle Creek. Here it is parked in front of the
Tonnaleuka Club. PDB October 2010 |
