Michigan Years (1954 - 1956)

In September 1954, I enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. I majored in Mathematical Statistics and received an MA degree in June 1956.

Minerva Road
My first year, 1954 - 55, I lived in a rented room in a private home on Minerva Road about a half mile southeast of the campus.  Another student, Harumi Befu, also had a room in that home; Harumi was a Japanese citizen.  Harumi took his meals at the Robert Owen House on Oakland St. just a few blocks from our rooms; Owen was one of the Inter Cooperative Council houses that provided room and board for Michigan students.  He talked me into getting my meals there and I did that for both my years at Michigan.  The meals were OK and quite inexpensive.  We all had regular assignments for clean up after meals.

Glacier Way
My second year; I rented a room in a private home on Glacier Way about three miles east northeast of the campus.  The new Michigan campus is now in that general area.  Rooms were hard to find in town and the citizens were asked to open their homes for students and since I had a car it worked out quite well.  The retired couple, I can't remember their name, were very nice and they had a very comfortable home.

Survey Research Center
I worked part time in the Sampling Section of the Survey Research Center helping select sample homes to be part of national opinion surveys.  It was a very complicated procedure to select a sample of 1000 homes to adequately represent all of the homes in the US.

Anne in Wheaton
Anne was a student at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL about 30 miles west of Chicago.  Every month or so, I would travel there for a weekend and twice Anne spent a weekend at the Michigan League.

Anne's Graduation from Wheaton
Instead of being part of my own graduation from Michigan in Ann Arbor, I traveled to Illinois to attend Anne's graduation from Wheaton.
